“The Cross of the Millennium” was a thoughtful and dynamic work that Frederick Hart developed over several years to celebrate the 2000th birthday of Jesus Christ.
The piece embraces the use of light the same way the medieval artists employed stained glass to create a powerful spiritual presence within a space.
Hart intricately designed the piece to represent Christ’s life with the Star of Bethlehem representing the birth and the crucifixion viewed from the front, and the capturing of the mysterious resurrection seen from the back.
In doing so Hart is able to convey the idea of transcendence both physically and spiritually.Hart went on to present the life-size sculpture to Pope John Paul II who declared the piece “a profound theological statement for our day.”
